News

Mondays are now 'Folk and Acoustic Nights',  no change to the evenings, just that the name reflects better what happens, but 'we' are still Barnsley Folk Club, if that makes sense.....

We have another website - on myspace -   http://www.myspace.com/barnsleyfolkclub

Artists - please note we only put paid guests on about every six weeks or so - that's all we can afford.  These tend to be people we already know of or who have already come to the Shaw as a floor performer, which you are always welcome to do.  Sorry, but as a not-for profit organisation run by volunteers, we just don't have the resources to reply to everyone that asks us to consider them for a booking via email/ myspace!

Guests / Events
as well as the weekly sessions ....

Mon 28th July Leon O'Doherty, Steph Shaw, Zoe Bottomley
Local Showcase night  there's bound to be loads of interest in this one so get there early to make sure of a seat - you can check all the artists out on our myspace site http://www.myspace.com/barnsleyfolkclub

    Mon 15th Sept  Gerry McNeice
Described by Tykes Magazine as ‘an artist to watch’ and featured recently in Living Tradition Magazine. A familiar face at many venues and festivals up and down the country, his music has been described as ‘honest’ and ‘superbly written, showing great insight and subtly melodic’  http://www.myspace.com/gerrymcneice

Mon 20th Oct – Robin Garside & Paul Gough...
... play mainly traditional folk and sea songs, but have been known to throw in a smattering of Jazz, Blues and humorous ditties to keep the night moving and the audience entertained. They intersperse their songs with droll banter and always send their audience home smiling!

Sat 8th NovDave Burland at THE KEEL INN (canal street) with Blackbush, The Barnsley Lads and String Theory
Dave is a uniquely calm, gentle and clever singer, who makes you feel it’s all so amazingly simple.  His apparently effortless guitar playing supplies the structural footings for the whole musical building.  He’s also got a deliciously wicked sense of humour” Nic Jones http://www.daveburland.co.uk
Entrance by Ticket Only £7.50 from Dave Bottomley 0780 304 9856

Mon 24th NovKatriona Gilmore & Jamie Roberts
An exciting upcoming acoustic act, blending contemporary singer-songwriter styles with complex rhythmic arrangements to create a new kind of roots fusion. With a wealth of original material, they combine sharp musical ability and considered harmonies with a fresh slant on today's folk scene. http://www.myspace.com/gilmoreroberts

All guest nights at the Shaw - £4 suggested, or whatever you can afford, for the Keel, see individual events

Non-BF&AN promotions .....

6th August - String Theory (Dave John and Sarah) are at playing at the Wharncliffe Arms, Wharncliffe Side http://www.myspace.com/stringtheoryuk

What to expect:

Normal Monday Nights

8 pm - Music session from 8 to 9 pm, everyone welcome from beginners to professionals. Mainly trad British tunes, some American.

9 pm - Singers and Musicians - Open Floor - Everyone who turns up gets the chance to perform or you can just listen.

All styles of music are welcome - from traditional songs and tunes to Blues, original material, Ragtime, 60's folk, covers of contempory songs, Cajun, anything really, including the occasional bit of Jazz (not had any death metal yet though- difficult to do death metal acoustic).  Live music is what it's all about we're not going to argue about what's folk music and what isn't  (cue a quote I've completely forgotten from Louis Armstrong).

The environment is ideal for new singers and musicians to practice performing in front of a friendly audience, or for experienced performers to try out new songs. The room we meet in has a domed ceiling, giving excellent acoustics (buffalo horns now sadly missing).

General etiquette is that no-one leaves or enters the room while someone is performing (to avoid distracting them), and that mobile phones are set to silent. We don't object to swearing in songs, but it is polite to ask first if children are present.

There is no admission charge, but Ray's hat gets passed around at half time and most people put a pound in, or what they can afford. Barnsley Folk Club is a not for profit organisation, money raised goes towards paying for the performers on guest nights.

Guest Nights (about every six weeks)

Guest nights are really informal gigs, the artist usually does two sets, with short open floor slots before each one and a break in the middle.

We take pride in providing a broad range of quality acts at an affordable admission price. Again there is no formal admission charge (unless one of our occasional ticketted events at the Keel Inn), we normally suggest a contribution of £4, or whatever people can afford. Doors open 8:00pm, music session until 8:30.

Who Comes?

Everyone is welcome. You don't have to be a member - the 'members' are the people that run the club, choose guests, etc - if you are interested, let us know and we'll tell you when the next meeting is

Disabled Access - The room we use in upstairs and therefore, regrettably, very limited in terms of disabled access.
